Highlighting The Most Important Stages Of TMT Bars Manufacturing
TMT bars or Thermo Mechanically Treated bars are one of the most popular construction materials when it comes to any residential or commercial construction and also bridges, flyovers, and other civil engineering structures. This is because TMT bars ensure high strength to the structures and improve their longevity. The best quality TMT bars can withstand severe stress and load which in turn, ensures protection to the structure from any damage. The anti-corrosive feature of the best quality TMT bars makes it even more popular in the field of construction.
There are a few steps involved in the manufacturing of TMT bars. So, let’s take a look at some of the most important stages which are involved in the process of manufacturing TMT bars.
-
Conversion of iron ore to steel – Iron ore, Coal, and Dolomite are some of the raw materials which are used in the process of manufacturing TMT bars. These raw materials are piled, recovered and blended in the appropriate proportion (as per the quantity required). After that, the iron ore is beneficiated in order to increase the iron content in it. The iron ore fines are then gathered into pellets and sinter to improve the efficiency and increase productivity. Coke and ore are then deployed to the furnace al and then hot air blast is injected through the nozzles of the furnace. This process melts the raw materials and it gets collected in the bottom of the furnace. The limestone combines with impurities and molten rock and forms a slag, which is lighter and floats on the surface of the molten metal.
-
Primary and Secondary steel making – In the initial stage primary steel making, oxygen is blown into the basic oxygen furnace which contains the molten iron from the blast furnace. This process eliminates the carbon dioxide. In the secondary stage, the steel is then ladle heated for refining the composition of the steel. During the casting process, the molten steel is transferred to ladle and then transferred to the continuous casting machine to produce billets.
- Thermo Mechanical Treatment – Thermo Mechanical Treatment consists of 3 steps –
-
Quenching – When the hot rolled bars are received from the mill, thermex technology is used in the manufacturing process to cool down the outer core of the bars and ensure the ductility of the TMT bars. The core remains hot and soft.
-
Self-tempering – Once the bars are done with the thermex quenching process, the core still remains hot which allows the heat to flow from the core to the surface. This causes tempering of the outer layer of the rebars, thus forming a structure called Tempered Martensite.
-
Atmospheric cooling – After the self-tempering, the bars are subjected to atmospheric cooling which is done on a cooling bed at room temperature. In this step, the austenitic core gets transformed into a ductile ferrite-pearlite structure. The final structure which is formed is a perfect combination of tensile strength, ductility, and weldability.
These are the processes which are involved in the manufacturing of the best quality TMT bars. At Shyam Metalics, we manufacture and supply the best quality TMT bars which meet international standards and ensure the protection of the structures.
