‘Made in India’ steel products on a global rise
India’s steel industry has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years. As the second-largest steel producer in the world, our nation’s production capacity is said to grow to 127 MT in FY24. Across industries, we’re doubling down on domestic manufacturing by adopting cutting-edge technologies and innovative practices.
Through this, we’re poised to make a significant impact on the global stage with various products and initiatives. The ‘Made in India’ initiative, championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one of them. Conceptualised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), it aims to achieve three things:
Standardise the Quality of Steel Products
Innovation is the cornerstone of the Indian steel industry’s success. Advanced manufacturing processes, such as automation and AI-driven quality control, have enhanced the efficiency and reliability of steel production.
Steel Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia (now Telecom Minister in the Modi 3.0 government) had said that this initiative ensures that steel products meet stringent quality standards, making them more competitive in the global market. This focus on quality is crucial as it helps to build trust and credibility among international buyers.
Establish a Strong Brand Recall
The ‘Made in India’ label serves as a mark of quality and trust. This unified and distinct identity aims to increase the visibility of domestic products globally. As of November 2023, 80% of Indian steel products contain the “Made in India” mark along with a QR code.
This unique code allows consumers and industry stakeholders to verify the authenticity and origin of the products, reinforcing the brand’s credibility and helping to combat counterfeit goods.
Ensure Sustainability Standards are Met
The focus on developing eco-friendly steel through sustainable practices aligns with global trends towards reducing carbon footprints. The Indian steel industry is increasingly adopting green technologies and processes to minimise environmental impact. This includes the use of renewable energy sources, waste recycling, and the implementation of energy-efficient manufacturing practices. By committing to sustainability, India enhances its appeal as a responsible and forward-thinking steel exporter.
The ‘Made in India’ initiative is a game-changer for the Indian steel industry. By focusing on quality, standardisation, and branding and implementing them, the world will soon recognise the excellence of Indian steel, proudly bearing a unique label. As our country forges ahead, this initiative will not only boost the country’s economy but also enhance its reputation as a global industrial leader.
